Something then caused the flame to disappear, and when the appliance attempted to establish combustion again, it could not do so successfully.

What Does F29 Mean on a Vaillant Boiler?

F29 is best understood as a flame-loss and failed re-ignition fault. The boiler's burner successfully ignites during its normal operating sequence. While the appliance is operating, however, the flame signal is lost. The boiler then attempts to establish the flame again. If that attempt is unsuccessful, it records F29 and stops normal operation. If none of those explains the fault, professional diagnosis is the next step.

Can a Frozen Condensate Pipe Cause F29?

Yes. This is one of the few F29 causes for which Vaillant provides specific homeowner guidance. Vaillant states that in freezing weather, both F28 and F29 can indicate that an external condensate pipe has frozen. Is F29 a Gas Valve Fault? F29 vs F54

This is an important distinction because many third-party articles automatically add the gas valve to every Vaillant ignition-related fault. Vaillant's current F29 cause list does not directly list a defective gas valve. However, Vaillant has another code that can appear alongside F28/F29: F54, a fault in the gas supply.

If your boiler has displayed both codes, tell the engineer.

Is Vaillant F29 Dangerous?

F29 is a safety lockout, so the appliance is responding to the fact that satisfactory combustion could not be maintained. That does not mean an F29 display automatically proves gas is leaking, carbon monoxide is entering the property, the boiler is immediately dangerous, or the gas valve has failed. It means the boiler has encountered a combustion/flame condition that requires resolution before reliable operation can continue. Internal investigation belongs with a Gas Safe registered engineer.
