Vaillant F22 Fault Code: Low Water Pressure, Causes & How to Fix It

F22 means your Vaillant boiler has detected low or insufficient water pressure and carried out a safety switch-off. Here is what pressure to check for, what else can cause F22, and when the fault needs a Gas Safe registered engineer.

If your Vaillant boiler is displaying F22, start by checking the boiler's water-pressure reading. Vaillant currently describes F.22 as "Low water pressure in the system". Its homeowner guidance says the normal system-pressure range is approximately 1-1.5 bar and advises that, if pressure is below 1 bar, a competent homeowner may be able to repressurise the system using the correct filling procedure for their boiler.

However, low pressure is not the only possible explanation for F22. Vaillant also lists problems involving the water-pressure sensor, wiring to the pump or pressure sensor, the heating pump on certain systems and the internal expansion vessel. That makes the pressure reading the most useful first troubleshooting step: with pressure below 1 bar, repressurisation may be appropriate; with pressure already above 1 bar, do not keep adding water, and arrange professional investigation instead.

Gas smell or carbon monoxide concern? Stop using the boiler immediately. Turn the gas off at the meter if it is safe to do so, open windows to ventilate, avoid electrical switches and naked flames, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. If you suspect carbon monoxide, leave the property and seek urgent help. Do not return until a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer has confirmed it is safe.

Vaillant F22 Fault Code at a Glance

The table below summarises the most-asked questions about F22 before the full detail further down the page.

QuestionAnswer
What does F22 mean?Vaillant currently defines F22 as a low-water-pressure safety switch-off.
What pressure should a Vaillant boiler have?Vaillant's general homeowner guidance recommends approximately 1-1.5 bar when the heating system is cold/off.
What should I check first?Check the pressure gauge or digital pressure display.
Can I fix F22 myself? If pressure is below 1 bar and you are competent to use your boiler's filling arrangement, Vaillant allows homeowner repressurisation following the appliance instructions.
What if pressure is already above 1 bar?Do not add more water. Vaillant advises engineer investigation.
Does F22 always mean a leak? No. Radiator bleeding, pressure-sensor faults, wiring, pump issues and expansion-vessel problems can also be relevant.
Can I keep resetting F22?A reset may restore operation after the underlying pressure issue is corrected, but repeated resetting does not fix recurring pressure loss or an internal fault.
03

What Does F22 Mean on a Vaillant Boiler?

The simplest current definition is that F22 means the boiler has detected low or insufficient water pressure and has carried out a safety switch-off. Vaillant's current ecoTEC installation documentation describes F22 as "Safety switch-off: Low water pressure" and identifies the underlying condition as no or insufficient water in the appliance, or water pressure that is too low. Current homeowner guidance also identifies additional possible fault areas including water pressure below the normal range, a problem with the water-pressure sensor, loose, disconnected or defective wiring for the pump or pressure sensor, a defective water-pressure sensor, pump problems on open-vented boilers, and a defective internal expansion vessel. F22 is not always solved by simply adding water. First establish what pressure the boiler is actually showing.

Why Do Some Vaillant Manuals Call F22 "Dry Fire"?

If you search online for F22, you may also see the term "dry fire" or "dry firing". That wording comes from older Vaillant documentation. An earlier ecoTEC installation and servicing manual defines F22 as "Dry fire" and lists too little water in the appliance, a defective water-pressure sensor, faulty cable to the pump or water sensor, a blocked or defective pump and insufficient pump output as possible causes. Newer Vaillant documentation instead uses the clearer description "Safety switch-off: Low water pressure". The terminology has changed between boiler generations, but both relate to the boiler protecting itself when satisfactory water/pressure conditions cannot be confirmed. Whether you have seen "Vaillant F22 dry fire" or "Vaillant F22 low pressure", the troubleshooting principle is the same: check the pressure first and do not assume which internal component is responsible.

What Pressure Should a Vaillant Boiler Be?

Vaillant's current homeowner guidance generally recommends approximately 1-1.5 bar when the central heating is cold or switched off. Pressure normally rises somewhat as the heating operates because heating water expands. The correct value can vary by appliance and installation, so your own Vaillant operating manual remains the final reference for your particular model. The precise warning and lockout thresholds also vary between models: one current ecoTEC plus installation manual states that below 0.8 bar the displayed pressure starts flashing, below 0.5 bar that particular appliance switches off and displays F22, and after refilling the display continues flashing until at least 1.1 bar is reached. That does not mean every Vaillant boiler uses exactly the same threshold. For homeowners, the simpler rule is: below 1 bar, repressurisation may be appropriate; above 1 bar with F22 remaining, professional diagnosis is required.

04

What Causes a Vaillant F22 Fault?

Vaillant identifies several possible causes rather than a single failed component. Correct diagnosis means checking each area rather than assuming the boiler simply needs water.

Low Water Pressure

A sealed central-heating system contains a controlled volume of water. If enough water is lost, system pressure falls and the boiler triggers F22 as a safety switch-off. Check the pressure display before doing anything else.

Water Loss or a Heating-System Leak

Water may escape from radiator valves, connections, visible pipework, towel rails, joints or other components. F22 does not prove a leak exists, but if pressure repeatedly falls after being restored, a leak becomes one of the things to investigate.

Faulty Water-Pressure Sensor

This becomes particularly relevant where the boiler continues displaying F22 despite pressure apparently being above the low-pressure range. A normal-looking pressure indication alone does not conclusively diagnose the sensor.

Pump or Pressure-Sensor Wiring Fault

Loose, disconnected or faulty wiring for the pump or pressure sensor can produce an F22 condition even when adding water is not the solution. Internal electrical inspection belongs with a competent engineer.

Heating Pump Problem

Vaillant's current guidance mentions pump operation particularly in relation to open-vented boilers. Older documentation listed a blocked, defective or low-output pump among possible causes. Boiler generation and system configuration matter.

Expansion Vessel Problem

The expansion vessel helps manage the pressure change that occurs as heating water warms and cools. A fault here can contribute to unstable pressure behaviour and needs an engineer to establish the actual cause.

Recently bled your radiators? Bleeding radiators releases trapped air, but some system pressure is also lost during the process. Vaillant specifically warns homeowners to check boiler pressure again after bleeding radiators because an F22 code may appear if pressure subsequently becomes too low. That does not necessarily mean the boiler has developed a new fault, so check the pressure and follow the manufacturer's instructions for repressurising if necessary.
05

Does F22 Always Mean a Leak? What Should I Do First?

A system leak is one possible reason why pressure becomes low, but Vaillant also identifies pressure-sensor faults, wiring problems, pump-related problems and expansion-vessel faults, and separately confirms that bleeding radiators can lower system pressure enough for F22 to occur. F22 means low pressure or a problem associated with detecting or managing that condition. It does not mean your boiler definitely has a leak. The first practical step is to look at the boiler's pressure gauge or digital pressure display and use the reading to decide what happens next.

F22 with pressure below 1 bar

  • Low pressure may be the immediate problem
  • Vaillant says a competent homeowner may be able to repressurise the system
  • Restore pressure gradually to around 1-1.5 bar, following the instructions for your appliance
  • If pressure keeps falling afterwards, investigate the reason rather than repeatedly topping up

F22 with pressure above 1 bar

  • Do not add more water simply because F22 appears
  • Vaillant advises that this situation requires an engineer
  • Vaillant specifically tells homeowners not to open the boiler casing
  • Possible areas include the pressure sensor, wiring, pump and other relevant components
06

How to Repressurise a Vaillant Boiler Showing F22

Repressurisation is one of the relatively few boiler troubleshooting tasks Vaillant permits a competent homeowner to carry out. However, different Vaillant boilers use different filling arrangements, some with an integrated filling mechanism and others using an external filling loop. Check the manual for your particular boiler before beginning.

1

Confirm Pressure Is Genuinely Low

Repressurisation is appropriate when pressure is below the recommended range, not merely because F22 appears.

2

Switch Off and Allow the Boiler to Cool

Follow your model's instructions before beginning to repressurise.

3

Locate the Correct Filling Arrangement

Identify the filling mechanism or loop specified for your particular boiler.

4

Introduce Water Slowly

Watch the pressure gauge or digital display carefully as you fill.

5

Stop at the Specified Pressure

Vaillant's general homeowner guidance uses approximately 1-1.5 bar. Stop once you reach the value specified in your boiler manual.

6

Close the Filling Valves Fully

Ensure the valves are properly closed once the correct pressure has been reached.

7

Restart or Reset if Required

Follow the operating instructions for your particular Vaillant model.

8

Monitor the Pressure Afterwards

Check that the pressure remains stable rather than falling again shortly afterwards.

Boiler won't repressurise? If you operate the correct filling arrangement but pressure does not rise as expected, stop rather than experimenting with other valves. Possible explanations depend on the installation and may involve the filling arrangement itself, an isolation problem, pressure measurement, or another heating-system or boiler fault. Professional inspection is preferable to guessing. Do not continue filling if you are uncertain which valves form the filling arrangement, and do not keep adding water if the pressure is already normal.
07

Why Does F22 Keep Coming Back?

An F22 fault that repeatedly returns after repressurising deserves investigation. It tells us either that the system is repeatedly losing pressure, or that the boiler is still having difficulty correctly detecting or managing the pressure condition. Potential areas include water loss somewhere in the heating system, a pressure-sensor problem, pump or sensor wiring, pump operation depending on the boiler/system, and the internal expansion vessel.

Make a note of how quickly pressure falls, for example: drops again within hours, drops over several days, falls only after the heating cools, rises significantly when hot and then becomes very low when cold, or pressure appears normal but F22 remains. Those patterns can provide useful diagnostic information to the engineer.

Repeated repressurisation should not become routine. Occasionally restoring pressure, particularly after radiator bleeding, can be normal, but if the boiler needs frequent topping up, the reason the system is losing or mismanaging pressure needs investigating. Repeatedly restoring the pressure can hide the symptom without correcting the underlying problem.

F22 but the pressure is normal? If your boiler shows F22 while the pressure reading is above 1 bar, Vaillant advises professional investigation rather than further repressurisation. Relevant areas can include the water-pressure sensor, sensor or pump connection, cable/wiring, heating pump and other pressure-management components. It is tempting to conclude the gauge is normal so the pressure sensor must be broken, but the fault code does not establish that conclusively. A Gas Safe registered engineer should test the relevant components before replacement.
08

F22 vs F75 vs F73/F74: What's the Difference?

These are among Vaillant's best-known pressure-related faults, and they are frequently confused. Vaillant's current ecoTEC professional manual lists these as separate diagnostic faults.

FaultWhat It MeansMain Question
F22Safety switch-off because water pressure is too low/insufficientIs there enough water pressure?
F75Expected pressure change is too low when the heating pump startsDid pressure respond correctly when the pump started?

F22 concerns insufficient pressure/water, while F75 concerns the pressure response associated with pump operation. This explains why a boiler can potentially display F75 even when its static pressure appears reasonable, whereas checking the actual pressure is the primary first step for F22. See our separate guide to the Vaillant F75 boiler fault for the pump-start pressure-change fault.

F73 and F74 are more specifically associated with the water-pressure sensor signal. Older Vaillant ecoTEC documentation distinguishes them as F73, a water-pressure sensor signal outside range on the low side, and F74, a water-pressure sensor signal outside range on the high side. F22, by contrast, describes the boiler's low-water/low-pressure safety condition. A pressure sensor can be involved in F22 without F22 itself simply meaning pressure sensor failure.

09

Can I Reset a Vaillant Boiler With F22, and Is It Dangerous?

A reset may be appropriate after the low-pressure condition has been corrected, using the reset procedure for your particular Vaillant model. Vaillant notes that resetting can sometimes clear a fault or temporarily return the boiler to operation. However, resetting does not restore lost system water, and it does not repair a leak, defective pressure sensor, wiring fault, pump problem or expansion-vessel fault. Repeatedly resetting an F22 boiler without addressing the pressure problem is not useful troubleshooting. The boiler's F22 safety switch-off exists specifically to prevent normal operation when acceptable water/pressure conditions cannot be confirmed, so the correct response is to resolve the pressure condition rather than attempting to force the boiler to operate. Never bypass an F22 safety lockout or interfere with internal controls.

Is F22 Dangerous?

F22 itself is principally a low-water-pressure safety fault, not a gas-leak warning. The boiler has stopped normal operation because it cannot confirm appropriate water/pressure conditions. In most cases, that means the immediate practical problem is loss of heating and hot water rather than a gas emergency. However, do not open the boiler casing or carry out internal repairs.

For general model instructions: see our guide to resetting a Vaillant boiler.
10

How Will an Engineer Diagnose Repeated F22 Faults?

The exact process depends on the Vaillant model and heating-system design, but a professional investigation can include several stages.

1

Confirm the Actual System Pressure

Establishing whether the heating circuit really is losing pressure or whether the reported pressure is unreliable.

2

Look for Evidence of Water Loss

Where genuine pressure loss is occurring, the wider heating system can be assessed for signs of leakage.

3

Check the Water-Pressure Sensor

Vaillant specifically includes the pressure sensor in the F22 diagnostic process.

4

Check Wiring and Connections

Inspecting the plug and cable connections associated with the heating pump and pressure sensor.

5

Assess Pump Operation Where Relevant

The heating pump can be assessed where the appliance and system configuration make it relevant to F22.

6

Assess the Expansion Vessel

Where pressure behaviour suggests a pressure-management problem, the internal expansion vessel may require assessment.

7

Refill, Purge and Test the System

Vaillant's current professional ecoTEC diagnostic procedure includes activating its purge/check programme after the relevant checks.

Do I need a Gas Safe engineer for F22? Not necessarily just to check the pressure. Vaillant explicitly allows a competent homeowner to restore low pressure using the proper filling arrangement where pressure is below 1 bar. Arrange professional help when F22 remains despite pressure being above 1 bar, pressure repeatedly drops after topping up, you cannot safely identify or operate the filling arrangement, there is evidence of leakage, the pressure behaves abnormally, an internal sensor, pump, expansion vessel or wiring problem is suspected, or F22 repeatedly returns. Internal gas-boiler repair should be carried out by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.
11

Cost, Repair vs Replace & Preventing F22

How Much Does It Cost to Fix a Vaillant F22 Fault?

There is no single meaningful F22 repair price because F22 is not a failed-part code. In some cases, there may be no repair charge beyond correctly repressurising the system. In others, diagnosis may identify a leak, pressure-sensor fault, electrical/wiring problem, pump issue, expansion-vessel fault or another heating-system problem causing repeated pressure loss. Those repairs vary substantially in labour, parts and complexity, so generic online "F22 repair prices" should not be treated as a quotation for your boiler. We diagnose recurring Vaillant pressure faults and provide a quotation based on the problem actually found.

Does F22 Mean I Need a New Boiler?

No. F22 is one of the last fault codes that should automatically lead someone to conclude that the boiler needs replacing. A simple low-pressure situation can potentially be resolved by correctly restoring system pressure. Even where an underlying component is responsible, pressure sensors, expansion-vessel issues, wiring and other system faults can often be repaired. Boiler replacement becomes worth considering only where the diagnosed repair is significant and the wider condition of the appliance makes further investment difficult to justify. Relevant factors include boiler age, overall condition, previous breakdown history, other components showing deterioration, parts availability and total repair cost. Diagnose first. Make the repair-versus-replacement decision afterwards.

Can Servicing Prevent F22?

Regular boiler servicing cannot guarantee that an F22 fault will never occur. For example, bleeding radiators can reduce system pressure even where the boiler itself is perfectly serviceable. However, routine maintenance can help identify problems affecting the boiler or heating system before they develop into repeated pressure faults. If your boiler frequently loses pressure between services, do not simply wait until the next annual visit. Have the underlying cause investigated.

FAQ

Vaillant F22 Fault Code FAQs

Vaillant currently defines F22 as a low-water-pressure safety switch-off. It occurs where insufficient water or pressure is detected, although the pressure sensor, associated wiring and heating pump can also be relevant to diagnosis.
Vaillant's general homeowner guidance recommends approximately 1-1.5 bar when the heating system is cold or switched off. Always check your particular boiler manual because requirements can vary between models.
The exact threshold can depend on the boiler. One current ecoTEC plus manual shows a low-pressure warning below 0.8 bar and F22 shutdown below 0.5 bar, while Vaillant's general homeowner guidance tells users to act when pressure is below 1 bar. Check your specific appliance instructions.
Older Vaillant ecoTEC documentation used "Dry fire" as the F22 description. Newer documentation uses "Safety switch-off: Low water pressure". Both relate to insufficient water/pressure conditions being detected by the appliance.
If the boiler pressure is genuinely below 1 bar and you are competent to use the correct filling arrangement, Vaillant says you may repressurise the system according to your boiler's instructions. Internal diagnosis or component repair should be left to a suitably qualified engineer.
First check the pressure. If it is low, restore it to the range specified in your boiler manual using the correct filling procedure. A reset may then be required depending on the model. If F22 remains despite normal pressure, arrange professional diagnosis.
Vaillant states that this situation requires engineer investigation. A water-pressure sensor, wiring, pump or another relevant component may require checking. Do not add more water simply because F22 appears.
No. A leak can cause pressure loss, but F22 can also follow radiator bleeding or involve the pressure sensor, wiring, pump or expansion vessel.
Yes. Vaillant advises checking boiler pressure after bleeding radiators because the process can lower pressure enough for an F22 code to appear.
Recurring F22 suggests either repeated pressure loss or another problem affecting pressure detection or management. Possible areas include leaks, the water-pressure sensor, wiring, pump or expansion vessel.
No. Occasional repressurisation can be normal, particularly after radiator bleeding, but repeated pressure loss needs investigating. Continually topping up treats the symptom rather than identifying why pressure is being lost.
Yes. Vaillant currently lists a defective internal expansion vessel as one potential F22 cause. It needs professional assessment rather than being diagnosed from the fault code alone.
Yes. Vaillant specifically lists a defective water-pressure sensor and related wiring as possible causes.
Potentially. Vaillant's current professional ecoTEC instructions include the heating pump in F22 diagnosis, while older documentation explicitly lists a blocked, defective or low-output pump among possible causes.
No. F22 concerns low or insufficient system water pressure. F75 concerns an insufficient pressure change when the heating pump starts. A Vaillant boiler can therefore potentially show F75 even when its static pressure is not particularly low.
No. F73 and F74 relate more specifically to abnormal water-pressure-sensor signals, whereas F22 is the boiler's low-water/low-pressure safety condition.
Yes, a reset may be used where appropriate after the underlying pressure problem has been corrected and in accordance with your boiler's operating instructions. Resetting alone will not restore lost pressure or repair an underlying fault.
It can. F22 is a safety switch-off, so the boiler may stop firing. This can result in loss of central heating and, on a combination boiler, domestic hot water until the pressure condition or underlying fault is resolved.
F22 itself is primarily a low-water-pressure safety condition rather than a gas-leak warning. The boiler's safety controls stop normal operation. Do not bypass the fault or undertake internal repairs. If you separately suspect a gas leak or unsafe appliance, follow HSE gas-safety guidance.
There is no single F22 repair price. Simply restoring low pressure is very different from repairing a leak, pressure sensor, pump, wiring problem or expansion vessel. Diagnosis is required before a meaningful repair quotation can be given.
No. F22 is commonly associated with pressure-related conditions that can be corrected or repaired. Boiler replacement should only be considered after the underlying fault and overall condition of the appliance have been assessed.

Need Help With a Vaillant F22 Fault?

If your Vaillant boiler displays F22, check its water-pressure reading first. Below 1 bar, follow your boiler's instructions to restore pressure if you are competent to do so. Above 1 bar and still showing F22, or if pressure keeps falling after topping up, arrange professional diagnosis.
