ToggleFix & Repair Engineers attended a call-out to a commercial premises in Hackney for a faulty Polar slush machine that was not maintaining correct operating temperature across both tanks.
Slush machines rely on stable refrigeration performance to maintain product consistency and food hygiene compliance. In this case, the unit was underperforming due to low refrigerant charge and restricted condenser airflow, both of which required immediate technical intervention.
Reported Fault
The customer reported:
- Slush mixture not reaching correct serving consistency
- Inconsistent tank temperatures
- Machine running but not achieving set temperature
The unit’s set temperature was configured at 4°C, however both tanks were failing to stabilise at the required level.
Engineer Diagnosis
Upon inspection, our engineer identified the following:
- System short of refrigerant
- No obvious visible signs of pipework damage
- Condenser coil heavily blocked, restricting airflow
Low refrigerant levels reduce cooling efficiency and can lead to compressor strain. Additionally, blocked condenser coils significantly impair heat dissipation, further reducing refrigeration performance.
Repair & Corrective Action Carried Out
The following works were completed on site:
- Recharged refrigerant to manufacturer-appropriate level
- Carried out full leak test using an electronic leak detector
- No obvious external leak detected during inspection
- Applied specialist Super Seal sealant to internally seal potential micro-leaks
- Thoroughly cleaned and unblocked condenser coil
- Monitored tank performance and stabilisation temperatures
Post-Repair Temperature Monitoring
After repairs:
- Tank 1 stabilised at 4°C
- Tank 2 stabilised at 5°C
- Set temperature confirmed at 4°C
The system was monitored to ensure consistent performance and proper pull-down to operating temperature.

Root Cause Summary
The primary issues identified were:
- Reduced refrigerant charge affecting cooling capacity
- Restricted condenser airflow due to coil blockage
- Possible micro-leak within sealed system (no obvious leak detected externally)
By restoring refrigerant levels, sealing potential internal leaks, and improving airflow, the unit returned to operational condition.

Why Refrigerant & Condenser Maintenance Is Critical
Commercial slush machines operate continuously during trading hours. Common causes of performance issues include:
- Refrigerant leaks
- Dirty or blocked condenser coils
- Poor ventilation around the unit
- Compressor overrun due to low gas pressure
Failure to address these issues can lead to:
- Product spoilage
- Increased energy consumption
- Compressor failure
- Environmental non-compliance
Regular servicing and refrigeration system checks are essential for hospitality businesses across London.
