Vaillant F61 Fault Code: Meaning, Causes & What to Do

F61 means your Vaillant boiler has detected a fault controlling its gas valve. Here is what the code means, what typically causes it, and why it needs a Gas Safe registered engineer rather than a reset-and-hope approach.

If your Vaillant boiler is displaying F61, the boiler has detected a problem controlling its gas valve and has stopped normal operation. In Vaillant's own ecoTEC installation and servicing documentation, F.61 is defined as "Gas-valve control defective". The manufacturer's listed causes include an electrical fault in the wiring harness to the gas valve, a defective gas-valve assembly, or a fault within the boiler's electronic control system.

That makes F61 different from many boiler faults that can be resolved by repressurising the heating system or changing a setting. The gas valve and its control system are safety-critical parts of the boiler, so an F61 fault that remains or returns needs investigation by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.

Gas smell or carbon monoxide concern? Stop using the boiler immediately. Turn the gas off at the meter if it is safe to do so, open windows to ventilate, avoid electrical switches and naked flames, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. If you suspect carbon monoxide, leave the property and seek urgent help. Do not return until a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer has confirmed it is safe.

Vaillant F61 Fault Code at a Glance

The table below summarises the most-asked questions about F61 before the full detail further down the page.

QuestionAnswer
What does F61 mean?Vaillant describes F.61 as a gas-valve control defect.
What are the main causes?Gas-valve wiring or cable harness fault, defective gas-valve assembly, or defective boiler electronics (PCB).
Will the boiler normally work? No. The boiler will normally enter fault or lockout mode rather than continue operating normally.
Can I repair F61 myself? No. Internal investigation involves gas and electrical safety components and requires a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.
Can I reset the boiler?A single reset may be attempted in line with your Vaillant operating manual if there is no smell of gas or other obvious safety concern. If F61 returns, arrange professional diagnosis.
Does F61 automatically mean the gas valve needs replacing? No. The valve is only one possible cause. Wiring or the electronic control system can produce the same fault code.
03

What Does F61 Mean on a Vaillant Boiler?

The simplest accurate explanation is that F61 means the boiler has detected a fault in the system responsible for controlling the gas valve. The gas valve controls the delivery of gas to the burner, so the boiler's electronic control system must be able to operate that valve correctly and reliably.

Vaillant's ecoTEC technical documentation lists three principal areas associated with F.61:

  • A short circuit or earth fault in the cable harness supplying the gas valve
  • A defective gas-valve assembly, including an electrical fault in its coils
  • A defective electronic control system

This distinction matters because F61 does not automatically mean "replace the gas valve". An engineer should diagnose the control circuit properly before deciding which component, if any, needs replacing.

Is Vaillant F61 a Gas Supply Fault?

Not primarily. Some online troubleshooting guides group F61 together with general problems such as loss of the incoming gas supply, but Vaillant's own F61 diagnostic table does not list loss of gas supply as one of the specific causes. It identifies the gas-valve control circuit, gas-valve assembly and electronic controls.

You can still check for an obvious wider supply problem, for example whether other gas appliances have also stopped working or whether a prepayment meter has run out of credit, but that does not replace diagnosis of the F61 fault itself. Loss of gas supply is much more directly relevant to faults such as Vaillant F28, where the boiler has attempted to ignite but has failed to establish a flame. If your display actually shows F28 rather than F61, see our separate guide to the Vaillant F28 fault code.

04

What Causes the Vaillant F61 Fault Code?

Vaillant identifies three distinct fault areas for F61. Correct diagnosis means checking all three rather than assuming which one applies.

Gas-Valve Wiring Harness

A short circuit, earth fault, damaged connection or other electrical problem in the wiring supplying the valve can stop the control system operating it correctly. This is one reason a gas valve should not simply be replaced because F61 appears on the display.

Defective Gas-Valve Assembly

The gas valve itself can fail electrically or mechanically, including an earth or ground leakage fault from its coils. If testing confirms a faulty valve, replacement may be required by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

PCB or Electronic Control Fault

The printed circuit board coordinates the boiler's operating sequence, including the gas valve. If this circuitry fails, F61 can appear even when the valve itself is not the root cause.

Why this matters for cost: Correct diagnosis is particularly important because both gas-valve and PCB replacement can represent significant repairs. Replacing parts without confirming the fault can quickly become expensive.
05

What Happens When F61 Appears, and Is It Dangerous?

When the boiler detects a fault that prevents it from safely controlling an important component, fault codes take priority over its normal display functions. Vaillant's ecoTEC servicing documentation explains that the appliance displays the relevant fault code when a system fault occurs and also stores recent faults in its fault memory for diagnostic purposes.

For the homeowner, the usual practical result of F61 is straightforward: the boiler may stop providing central heating, hot water or both until the fault has been cleared or repaired. This shutdown should not be treated simply as an inconvenience. It is the boiler responding to a problem in a safety-critical control system.

Is a Vaillant F61 Fault Dangerous?

F61 concerns the control of the boiler's gas valve, so it should be treated as a fault requiring professional attention. However, seeing F61 does not automatically mean gas is leaking into your property. The boiler's controls are designed to stop normal operation when they detect a fault. The important distinction is between an F61 code on its own and an actual indication of a gas leak.

If you can smell gas: do not attempt to reset or troubleshoot the boiler. Open doors and windows, avoid using anything that could create an ignition source, and contact the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. HSE advises that suspected natural-gas leaks should be reported immediately and that an appliance suspected of being unsafe should not be used until it has been checked by a competent person.
06

Can I Reset a Vaillant Boiler Showing F61?

Vaillant advises that resetting a boiler can sometimes clear a fault or temporarily restore operation, although the correct reset procedure depends on the appliance and should be taken from the boiler's operating manual.

For an F61 fault, if there is no smell of gas or other obvious safety concern, you can try one reset in accordance with the instructions for your Vaillant model. If F61 immediately returns, or disappears and then repeatedly comes back, do not continue resetting the appliance.

A reset does not repair damaged wiring, a defective gas valve or failing electronics. An intermittent F61 that temporarily disappears can therefore still require investigation.

Model-specific guidance: for step-by-step instructions, see our guide to resetting a Vaillant boiler.
07

What Can I Safely Check Before Calling an Engineer?

There is deliberately not a long DIY troubleshooting sequence for F61. Gas Safe Register states that anyone repairing or servicing a gas boiler must be appropriately registered.

Information to gather

  • The exact fault shown, including whether it is F.61
  • Your Vaillant boiler model
  • Whether both heating and hot water have stopped
  • Whether the fault appeared once or keeps returning
  • Whether other gas appliances are operating normally
  • Whether there has recently been a power interruption
  • Any visible signs of water leaking around the appliance

Do not attempt

  • Removing the boiler casing to inspect the gas valve, wiring or PCB
  • Electrical resistance tests or voltage measurements
  • Gas-pressure checks or gas-valve adjustments
  • Component replacement of any kind
08

How Will a Gas Safe Engineer Diagnose F61?

A competent engineer should diagnose the fault rather than replacing whichever component is most commonly associated with the code. The precise procedure depends on the particular Vaillant boiler and its service documentation, but diagnosis normally focuses on the areas Vaillant identifies for F61.

1

Checking the Fault History

Establishing whether F61 is isolated or whether other stored faults point towards a wider electrical or combustion-related problem.

2

Inspecting the Gas-Valve Control Circuit

Testing the connections and wiring between the boiler electronics and the gas-valve assembly for electrical faults.

3

Testing the Gas-Valve Assembly

Determining whether the gas valve responds correctly and whether the assembly itself has developed an electrical or operational defect.

4

Assessing the Boiler Electronics

If the wiring and gas-valve assembly are satisfactory, the PCB and its gas-valve control circuitry are investigated further.

5

Repair, Recommissioning & Safety Checks

Once the defective component or connection has been identified, the necessary repair is carried out and the boiler tested before being returned to service.

Does F61 mean the gas valve needs replacing? Not necessarily. Vaillant lists three different fault areas, the wiring harness, the gas-valve assembly and the electronic control system. A replacement valve may solve the problem when the valve has genuinely failed, but replacing it without first checking the rest of the circuit risks paying for a component that was not responsible for the fault. The same applies to the PCB. Proper diagnosis comes first.

Vaillant F61 vs F62 vs F28: What's the Difference?

F61 and F62 are closely related, but they do not mean exactly the same thing, and both differ from F28. This table explains why searching for a generic "Vaillant gas valve fault" can produce confusing advice.

Fault CodeVaillant DefinitionMain Areas Identified
F61Gas-valve control defectiveGas-valve cable harness, gas-valve assembly, electronic control system
F62Gas-valve shut-off delayGas valve leaking or electronics defective
F28Boiler fails to start after ignition attemptsGas supply, gas valve, ignition system, flame detection, earthing or electronics
In short: F61 is principally a gas-valve control fault. F62 relates specifically to delayed gas-valve shut-off. F28 is an ignition failure. If several of these codes are appearing, tell the engineer which codes you have seen rather than reporting only the most recent one.
10

Cost, Repair vs Replace & Preventing F61

An intermittent fault can disappear after a reset without actually being repaired. If a wiring connection, electronic component or gas-valve control circuit operates correctly at one moment and fails at another, the boiler may temporarily restart before locking out again. This is why repeated resetting is not a sensible long-term response to F61. Record how often the fault appears and whether it happens during heating demand, hot-water demand or initial start-up, as this can help the engineer reproduce and diagnose an intermittent problem.

How Much Does It Cost to Repair a Vaillant F61 Fault?

There is no single meaningful price for an F61 repair because F61 is a diagnostic code, not a failed-part code. A relatively straightforward wiring or connection fault will have a very different repair cost from replacement of a gas-valve assembly or PCB. The final price can depend on:

  • The exact Vaillant model
  • Which component has failed
  • Parts availability
  • Diagnostic time and accessibility
  • The overall condition of the boiler
  • Whether more than one fault is present

For that reason, avoid assuming that an online price for a "Vaillant F61 repair" is what your own repair will cost.

Is It Better to Repair or Replace a Vaillant Boiler With F61?

F61 does not automatically mean the boiler needs replacing. A repair usually makes sense when the appliance is otherwise in good condition and the identified fault can be corrected economically. Replacement becomes worth discussing when several factors occur together, such as repeated major failures, several components approaching the end of their service life, substantial corrosion or water damage, poor availability of suitable parts, or a repair estimate that is difficult to justify against the condition of the boiler. Boiler age alone should not decide the issue. An engineer should first establish what has actually failed.

Can Annual Servicing Prevent F61?

No annual service can guarantee that an electrical component, PCB or gas valve will never fail. However, regular boiler maintenance gives an engineer an opportunity to identify deterioration, water ingress, damaged connections and other developing problems before they result in a breakdown. HSE strongly advises regular maintenance of gas appliances and recommends annual servicing by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

FAQ

Vaillant F61 Fault Code FAQs

Vaillant defines F.61 as "Gas-valve control defective". The manufacturer's listed causes include a short circuit or earth fault in the wiring harness to the gas valve, a defective gas-valve assembly or a defective electronic control system.
It is a gas-valve control fault, but that does not prove the gas valve itself has failed. The wiring harness and boiler electronics can also cause F61.
Yes. Vaillant lists a defective electronic control system as one of the potential causes of F61.
Yes. Vaillant specifically identifies short-circuit or earth-leak faults in the cable harness supplying the gas valve as a possible cause.
No. The fault involves the gas-valve control system and internal boiler electronics. Investigation and repair should be carried out by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.
If there is no smell of gas or another safety concern, you may try one reset using the instructions for your particular Vaillant model. If F61 returns, arrange professional diagnosis rather than repeatedly resetting the boiler. Vaillant notes that resetting can sometimes clear a fault temporarily but does not suggest that it repairs the underlying cause.
An intermittent wiring, gas-valve or electronic-control problem can temporarily allow the boiler to restart. The disappearance of the code does not necessarily mean the underlying fault has gone.
No. Vaillant defines F61 as defective gas-valve control and F62 as a gas-valve shut-off delay. F62 is associated with a leaking gas valve or defective electronics in the manufacturer's fault table.
No. F28 means the appliance attempted to ignite but failed to start. F61 concerns the control of the gas valve itself. Vaillant lists a much broader range of ignition and gas-supply causes for F28.
Not necessarily. Wiring faults, gas-valve faults and electronic-control faults can all potentially be repaired. The decision should be based on the diagnosed repair, condition of the boiler, previous fault history and overall repair economics rather than the F61 code alone.
The price depends on the actual cause. A wiring repair, gas-valve replacement and PCB replacement are very different jobs, so the boiler should be diagnosed before a meaningful repair price is given.
Do not reset or continue using the boiler. Ventilate the property, avoid potential ignition sources and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Do not use the appliance again until it has been checked by a competent engineer.
