Location: Kensington, London
Service Type: Emergency Gas Catering Call-Out
Equipment: Commercial Pizza Oven
The Problem
We were called out out of hours to a restaurant in Kensington after reports that the commercial gas-powered pizza oven was not burning correctly. The flame pattern was irregular and unstable, posing a serious safety concern.
Upon arrival, our Gas Safe registered engineer immediately assessed the situation.
What We Found
The investigation quickly revealed a critical safety fault:
- The extraction system was not operating at all, resulting in dangerous fumes building up within the kitchen area.
- This created a serious and immediate risk of carbon monoxide exposure, putting staff and customers in danger.
The oven itself was not faulty – the issue was the unsafe environment caused by the lack of ventilation.
Work Completed
To protect life and property, our engineer:
- Made the entire system safe by isolating the pizza oven from service.
- Explained to the restaurant owners that continuing to operate the oven without proper extraction would be a direct threat of carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Advised that, under Gas Safe regulations, the appliance must not be operated until the extraction system is repaired and fully functional.
Although the owners were unhappy that the oven had to be shut down, the engineer clearly outlined his responsibility under Gas Safe requirements: safety before service.
Outcome
Thanks to the prompt response and decisive action, the dangerous situation was controlled before anyone was harmed.
The business was provided with a clear action plan to restore safe operation once the extraction faults are corrected.
