Fix & Repair Engineers were recently called out to a commercial site in Fulham for help with a leaking water filter cartridge on a tea water boiler used for hot drinks service. What began as a simple cartridge change turned into a fault-finding visit to identify why the new filter could not be fitted correctly and was causing leakage.
The Call – Fulham, London
The client requested a commercial catering engineer to attend and replace the water filter cartridge serving their tea water boiler. Although they already had a replacement cartridge on site, staff were unable to install it without water escaping from the filter housing.
We arranged a rapid response, with our engineer arriving within the hour to minimise downtime and ensure the hot drinks station could be brought back into reliable use.
Initial Inspection & Safety Checks
On arrival, the engineer:
- Confirmed the reported issue with the filter housing leaking when the new cartridge was fitted
- Shut off the water supply and isolated the unit to prevent further leaks or potential water damage
- Visually inspected the external pipework, filter head, and connections for obvious cracks, damage, or loose fittings
With no immediate visible cause of the leak, a more in-depth inspection of the tea water boiler itself was required.
Stripping Down the Tea Water Boiler
To rule out any internal damage, the engineer carefully dismantled the tea water boiler:
- Removed the outer panels to access the internal components
- Checked for signs of water ingress, corrosion, or dislodged parts around the inlet, filter connection and boiler assembly
- Verified that all internal pipework, seals and fittings associated with the filter line were intact
All internal components were found to be in good condition, with no evidence of damage or parts having moved out of place. This indicated that the issue was likely related to the filter cartridge or filter head rather than a fault within the boiler itself.
Diagnosis – Incorrect Filter Cartridge Supplied
With the boiler checked and confirmed sound, the engineer turned attention back to the filter assembly and replacement cartridge. After double-checking the specification:
- The engineer compared the model and version of the supplied cartridge against the filter head and unit requirements
- It was identified that the cartridge on site was a different version to the one required for this specific filter head
- Because of this mismatch, the cartridge could not seat correctly, preventing a proper seal and causing water to escape when the supply was turned on
In short, there was no mechanical fault with the tea water boiler or filter housing – the problem was simply that the wrong cartridge type had been provided.
Outcome & Next Steps for the Client
Our engineer:
- Explained the findings clearly to the client, confirming that the boiler and internal components were in good working order
- Advised that the correct model/version of filter cartridge would be required to achieve a proper seal and stop the leak
- Offered to source and supply the correct cartridge and return to complete the installation, including testing for leaks and confirming normal operation
Until the correct cartridge is fitted, the filter assembly will remain isolated to prevent further leakage or water damage. Once the appropriate cartridge is installed, the system will provide properly filtered water, protecting the boiler from limescale and ensuring consistent beverage quality.
